15th Annual Awards Luncheon—Defender of Innocence Honoree
Brown, Goldstein & Levy LLP
Defender of Innocence Award Recipient
Civil rights firm Brown, Goldstein & Levy (BGL) is a longtime MAIP partner. BGL has represented more than ten exonerees, including MAIP clients, in their efforts to seek compensation for years of wrongful incarceration through civil rights lawsuits and through the state statutory compensation system. In 2023, BGL secured a historic settlement from the city of Baltimore for MAIP clients Ransom Watkins, Andrew Stewart, and Alfred Chestnut, who collectively spent over 108 years in prison for a crime they did not commit. To date, the firm has recovered more money than any law firm in the country for people who were wrongfully convicted in Baltimore.
Beyond the courtroom, BGL provides holistic support to exonerees as they re-enter society, connecting them to employment opportunities, healthcare, and other services. In addition, BGL has successfully advocated key reforms to Maryland’s exoneree compensation laws. This spring, the firm’s testimony helped lead to the passage of HB 1086, a law that expands benefits for exonerees. We are proud to present Brown, Goldstein & Levy with the Defender of Innocence award for its passionate advocacy on behalf of exonerees and extraordinary commitment to the exoneree community.
